Primal Pups (ages 5-8) Connect 2018
April 18, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 3:50 pm
An event every week that begins at 12:00pm on Wednesday, repeating until June 6, 2018
Passion is lifted from the earth itself by the muddy hands of the young; it travels along grass-stained sleeves to the heart.” – Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods
What this class seeks to accomplish is the reestablishment of one of the most rare species known in the world today: The Child in Nature. Our ancestors’ childhoods largely revolved around cultivating a deep awareness of their environment, multi-sensory integration, learning gratitude, and developing a deep sense of place in nature and the community. All Primal Pups will be mentored in a similar way, in a wide variety of primitive skills through games, direct experiences and story. In our time together, we will begin to lay down the foundation of awareness, connection and gratitude that will prepare students for a life time of loving nature and advanced study in primitive skills and survival.
On any given day you may find us doing the following: Playing games to develop and attune our senses. Wandering timelessly contemplating nature in our sit spots. Practicing primitive movements like brachiation, squatting, low gate maneuvers, and joyful, spontaneous free running in the forest and in the trees. Telling our stories and hearing the stories of others. Making primitive toys like dolls, bows and arrows. Knapping rocks and making primitive tools. Assembling shelters from found materials. Creating nature art like mandalas and sculptures. Practicing fire making (when safe to do so) and beginning knife skills for those that are ready. Foraging for wild foods and medicines, identifying plants and learning botany. Tracking animals and learning bird language. Exploring field guides and journaling. Gathering together for meals and snacks, and singing songs. Howling like wolves, cawing like crows, and cooing like doves. Getting muddy and painting our faces.
Our class will observe a solid rhythm that allows plenty of time for eating lunch, snacks. and bathroom breaks.
Come Rewild with us!
