Literature & Language – Innovate 2018
February 12 @ 2:00 pm - 3:50 pm
An event every week that begins at 2:00pm on Monday, repeating until April 9, 2018
A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies […] The man who never reads lives only one.” ― George R.R. Martin,
Whether it’s reading a book or a comic, learning a new language, or writing a story, literature and language help students to develop in countless ways. In today’s fast-paced world, it is increasingly important to communicate effectively, understand another’s points of view, and to be able to express your own. Join us this session as we explore the literature and language. Last year we did bookmaking, comic book writing, reading and exploring children’s books, sign language, beginner and advanced book clubs and more.
The independent study ticket is for independent work or Makerspace time.
Ages 8-13: For the first hour of class, we will have introductory ASL taught by Kara Sullivan. If your student does not wish to participate in the language option, then they may take this time to read, write a story of their own choosing, or journal.
The second hour of this class will be devoted to literature taught by Jacey Hermann. Last semester we read the book Wonder and discussed character development. Our writing projects were also heavily oriented on character development in stories and comics. If students wish to continue with this theme, we may do so. We have also written a class newspaper together, poetry, interviews, and short weekly writing assignments in class. The goal for this class is to continue developing reading and listening comprehension, and self expression and communication through writing and class discussion. This can take whatever form the students or parents are interested in.
Students must bring a notebook to write in which will stay at eNDVR for the term. If your student has a notebook from the previous semester, they do not need to bring a new one.
