Innovate (ages 10-18)
February 1, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 3:30 pm
An event every week that begins at 12:00pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, repeating until March 28, 2016
Our Innovate class is a part time school option for students ages 10 to 18. Students are divided into two groups: the Voyagers (ages 10-14) and the Trailblazers (ages 13-18). Innovate classes are not just about technology, they’re about becoming independent workers and thinkers! Innovate students meet Mon-Thurs from 12:00-3:30. Study groups, classes and leadership opportunities are available to these students in the morning if a family is looking for a full time option.
Here’s what our week looks like:
Mon-Thurs: 12:00-12:30 – Lunch and Free Time
12:30-2:00 MSU Looney Challenge: Learn software, robotics and engineering concepts through fun online challenges.
2:00-3:30 Choice of: Blogging or Spill Your Guts Book Club
Blogging: Learn how to set up a wordpress blog, a youtube channel and more! Students can blog about their experiences at eNDVR or about the topic of their choice.
Spill Your Guts: If you love discussions related to books and movies, then bring your favorite titles to class! We’ll not only enjoy group discussions, but we’ll explore thoughts through writing, art, music and drama.
Tues & Thurs:
12:30-3:30 Choice of: Technology Seminar or Technology Projects
Technology Seminar: 8 weeks, 8 topics! We will explore video game development, pixel art, animation, 3D printing, robotics, stop motion animation, Minecraft and electronic music!
Technology Projects: Students who really enjoy one of our seminars may want to take extra time to work on a personal or group project. Some students may want to build a complete video game and upload it to the app store. Other students may want to build their own Minecraft world or focus on python programming in Minecraft. Students who wish to complete technology projects will need to submit a project plan and
be responsible for meeting plan milestones.
There are several choices for students on Wednesdays:
12:30-1:30 Independent Gaming Time: Play Minecraft and other games with friends.
1:30-3:30 Java Programming: With the increase in computer usability, writing your own programs is easier than ever! This class opens up the world of Java, a computer language that can be written and executed on any computer. By the end of this class, developing programs, from simple games to data entry tools, will be possible.
1:30-3:30 Online courses in computer programming and robotics: Students will select an online course through Coursea, Edx, Khan Academy or another website in order to learn how to program or create web pages. During this time, they can get help with their coursework from an experienced software developer.
1:30-3:30 Lab Time: Students who are working on personal projects may choose to use Wednesdays as additional lab time.
12:30-3:30 Linux, Networking and Robotics (3 1 hour courses): Students will work in groups of 2 to install and configure Linux on a laptop computer. They will learn basic commands and navigation. They will then learn how to use these computers to program Arduino robotics.
