Adventure in Fablehaven (ages 8-13) Connect 2018

For centuries mystical creatures were gathered into a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary is one of the last strongholds of true magic. Enchanting? Absolutely. Exciting? You bet. Safe? Well, actually, quite the opposite …

Kendra and her brother, Seth, have no idea that their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws keep order among greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. However, when the rules get broken, powerful forces of evil are unleashed, and Kendra and her brother must face the greatest challenge of their lives to save their family, Fablehaven, and perhaps even the world.

-Brandon Mull

Join the 8-13 Literature & Language class as we go on an Adventure in Fablehaven. For this class, we will be reading through book one of Brandon Mull’s Fablehaven. We will work on projects related to the themes and ideas that we find in the book. One week we might learn about the history and lore of fairies and write our own stories, and draw pictures. Another week may discuss character and storytelling as we learn about Kendra and Seth, and explore what makes for good character development in a story.

This class will be very book and student driven. If the students become interested in a certain idea or theme, they will help decide what we do in class! We will always be using the book as an anchor for our week to week discussion and direction.

To enroll your child in this class there are two commitments you must make as a parent.

1.)    Purchase a copy of Fablehaven by Brandon Mull. If you have multiple children in the class, one copy per family is enough. You may purchase an ebook version or paperback. It is up to you. Students will not need to bring the book to class, unless they want to in order to share something.

2.)    Commit to reading the set chapters of the book at home. Your child can read these chapters by themselves, or if they are unable to do it alone, you the parent will read them aloud to the student. There will be 2-3 chapters to read per week.

These commitments are vital to the success of the class! I will be sending out an email at the beginning of the term that will outline which chapters need to be read for class. The first three chapters will need to be read before the first day of class: Monday, April 16. This way we can dive right into the world of Fablehaven!

The independent study ticket is for independent work or Makerspace time.
